Speaker of the House?

The Fiasco

If you have been keeping up with politics recently, then you have heard about representative Kevin McCarthy being removed as speaker of the house. This is the first time in United States history that a speaker of the house has been voted out according to Forbes. Forbes has no bias towards any political party according to AllSides. Eight republicans and all of the democrats voted to remove him. This leaves the house without a speaker. Many republicans decided to vote for representative Jim Jordan as the new speaker of the house. After three voting rounds, Jim Jordan has not received enough votes to become the speaker of the house according to Forbes. A lot of people would say that this is one giant mess. Let's look and see what the news is saying.

The Media

In an article discussing this topic by the Guardian, it uses the words "dysfunction", "screaming matches", and "death threats". This article tends to criticizes the republican party. The Guardian voices its opinion by stating this shows the republican party is not united. They also state that critics have never seen a major political party this broken. AllSides reports that the Guardian has a left leaning bias.

Prior to the third round of voting, Fox News posted an article that described the "rocky" road ahead for choosing a speaker of the house. This article primarily discussed how many opponents of Jim Jordan's bid for speaker will not change their minds. One representative believes that Jim Jordan will gain votes over the weekend. According to AllSides, Fox News has a right leaning bias.

Both of these media companies discusses what is going on in the house. The Guardian is much more critical of the situation than Fox News seems to be. The Guardian has a left leaning bias so this would make sense. Fox News has a right leaning bias so they would not be hypercritical of the situation. In my opinion, these media companies are reporting the situation in the way I though they would.

Presidential Election

In a presidential election, more than 2 people can run. You can see members from the Green party or the Libertarian party on the ballot. A voter can also write in a person on their ballot. It is extremely unlikely these candidates will win, but they do take away votes from others. I think the lack of unity that is appearing with house republicans may foreshadow some issue during the presidential election. If certain republicans do not like the republican nominee, they could vote for the democratic nominee. However, they could also write in another candidate. Thus, taking away a vote from the republican nominee. We have seen this in Georgia before. A third party candidate has received enough votes to cause a run-off election.

  1. This was a great article that caught me up on what's going on in the house! I've heard a tad bit of the situation but really haven't looked into it to see what exactly is going on. But now after reading this, I have much more of an understanding on the situation. It's crazy to see us having such a hard time electing a speaker of the house! But given our current political climate, it makes sense. We're so divided in everything so of course we're gonna struggle so hard coming to an agreement on who should be the speaker. I agree with you that this can be some foreshadowing for our upcoming election! I feel like our voting system needs a reboot to combat things like this. Great article!

  2. Great post! The voting on Speaker of the House has been a great mess, especially considering that Congress cannot function without a speaker. I would agree that it seems as though the Republican party is not united at all. We also saw this when Congress attempted to vote McCarthy for Speaker of the House. As Max states, we have become so divided that it partly makes sense. However, it continues to surprise me how divided a party can be within their own party. I wonder if this will play a significant role in the 2024 elections as there are some who strongly favor Trump and those who dislike him.
