The Life of Dianne Feinstein

Dianne Feinstein

According to AP News, democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away at the age of 90. At the time of her death, Feinstein was the oldest sitting Senator. Senator Feinstein's biography states that she was elected in 1992. She holds the record for the longest time a women has spent in the Senate. She led several bipartisan groups. One of these group passed legislation to increase fuel efficiency in vehicles. Senator Feinstein also held a roll in the passing of the 1994 federal Assault Weapons Ban. This law expired in 2004. Some of her political stances include: LGBTQ+ rights, commonsense gun laws, and reducing climate change.

News

Before her death, some news outlets stated that she should step down. According to a Fox News article that interviewed a former senator, Senator Feinstein was hurting her legacy. Fox News reported that Feinstein's daughter had power of attorney over her. This led Fox News to believe she was not competent enough to be a senator. Fox news has a right leaning bias according to AllSides. Upon her death, most media companies had some type of a tribute to her. Some news companies wrote about her accomplishments while others discussed what politicians were saying about her death.

If a senator passes away, steps down, or is removed from office, a governor must choose someone to take their place until a special election can occur according to California law. Senator Fienstein was from California. Therefore, Governor Gavin Newsom has chosen Laphonza Butler to take her seat according to CBS News. This is important because a government shutdown is brewing.

Take Aways

Although this does not directly affect the presidential election in 2024, I thought this deserved a blog post. Whether or not a person agrees with former Senator Dianne Feinstein's politics, one cannot say she was not influential. Because she served in the senate for so long, she will leave behind a lasting impact on the United States government. She will also be discussed for a long time when it comes to historical women.
