Nikki Haley: Who is She?
Background
Nikki Haley is currently running for the republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election. Currently she is polling at 8.7% according to fivethirtyeight. Last month, Haley was in fourth place but recently overtook Vivek Ramaswamy. Therefore, she now sits in third place. According to Nikki Haley's campaign website, she identifies as an Indian-American. Nikki Haley has served as a representative in the South Carolina State House as well as a Governor in South Carolina. In 2016, President Trump nominated her to be a ambassador to the United Nations.
Political Views
Rather than just stating her political views on her campaign website, Haley has a section that boast her results. In this section, one topic discussed is illegal immigration. While Haley was the South Carolina Governor, she signed what she considers to be one of the toughest illegal immigration laws. This law made businesses assure that each employee has a legal immigration status. Haley is also a strong advocate for school choice.
What the News is Saying
Recently, media coverage regarding Nikki Haley has been discussing the republican debate and rising in the polls. In this Fox News article, political commentator Laura Ingraham discusses how Nikki Haley has become mainstream media's favorite candidate. The New York Times and Politico have been praising Nikki Haley which leads Laura to believe this will ruin her career. Ingraham states that there is no future for a republican who is endorsed by companies like these. According to AllSides, Fox News has a right leaning bias.
In this New York Times opinion article, the writers believe that Nikki Haley has one every single debate. One of the reasons they believe this is because of her stance on abortion. They believe her stance makes her seem like a moderate. Another reason they believe she won was because of her foreign policy stance. The New York Times has a left leaning bias according to AllSides
It is interesting to see a right leaning bias media company stating that a republican's career may be dead.
Although, this is just a commentator's opinion. Most media companies have some candidate they want to win so they will release negative coverage of others when the chance presents itself. I think Nikki Haley is a candidate people should be watching closely. Although she is way behind Donald Trump's poll numbers, she has started to slowly creep forward.
Hi Emily! First, I want to say that I love your blog topic. I think this is a very important topic to cover with the upcoming election. I went through and looked over some of your previous posts, and I see that you have covered a lot of great topics. My last few posts are actually going to be geared towards the 2024 election and encouraging people to get engaged and involved. I found the background info on her to be quite interesting. I have read small things about her here and there, but I did not know she was Indian American. I see that you mentioned that she was Trumps UN Ambassador, did you know she was the first from his administration to challenge him? I think that is pretty brave to do.
